120 aftershocks recorded in Kamchatka in 24 hours

Over the past 24 hours, 120 aftershocks have been recorded in Russia’s Kamchatka after the magnitude 8,7 July 30 earthquake, Izvestia newspaper reported citing local authorities.

"120 aftershocks of magnitude from 3.5 to 6.7 occurred during the day," the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Russian Federation in the Kamchatka Territory said in a Telegram channel message, according to Izvestia.

The earthquake had triggered tsunami warnings as far away as French Polynesia and Chile.

Russian scientists said the quake in Kamchatka was the most powerful to hit the region since 1952.

Much of Japan's eastern seaboard, as well as parts of Hawaii, were ordered to evacuate.

Millions of people were told to move away from the shore or seek high ground because they were potentially in the path of the tsunami waves, which struck seaside areas of Japan, Hawaii and the U.S. West Coast but did not appear to cause any major damage.
