National Security Service (NSS) agents entered the premises of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin on Friday to arrest Archbishop Mikayel Ajapahyan. A brief altercation broke out between NSS agents and clergymen outside the premises. Ajapahyan—who is under criminal investigation for allegedly advocating the overthrow of the government—was at the Mother See alongside Catholicos Karekin II and other senior clergy.

Ajapahyan said he had no intention of hiding and would cooperate with law enforcement. He denounced the probe as unlawful, stating, “I am not a threat to the country.”

He was not immediately detained.
