Within the framework of the third UN Ocean Conference, Foreign Minister of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan signed, on behalf of the Republic of Armenia, the Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction (also known as the Global Ocean Treaty or the BBNJ Agreement), the foreign ministry said in a press release.
This is the first international agreement regulating the protection of marine biodiversity beyond national boundaries, as a component of ensuring sustainable development.
On the same day, 18 countries signed the agreement, bringing the total number of signatories to 134. It has already been ratified by 50 countries, 18 of which deposited their instruments of ratification with the depositary during the same ceremony held at the conference.
