Speaker of Parliament Alen Simonyan has issued a statement on Republic Day.

Below is the full statement published by his office.

“Dear compatriots,

“I congratulate all of us on Republic Day.

“On May 28, 1918, after the heroic battles of Sardarapat, Bash-Aparan, and Gharakilisa, the Armenian statehood that had been disrupted for centuries was restored. The Armenian people, having experienced one of the most difficult periods they faced, were able to believe in their strength and stood up, creating an independent republic. Although the First Republic of Armenia had a very short life, it was a turning point in terms of our national thinking and left a deep mark in the consciousness of the future generations.

“May 28 is not only about the past. It is our course towards the future, towards a stable, fair and strong state.

“Our generation has its responsible role to build a country where the state serves the citizen, and the citizen feels protected. This is our commitment, which we will certainly bring to life through joint efforts.

“Glory to all our martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the homeland.

“Happy Republic Day, citizen of the free, independent and sovereign Republic of Armenia.”
