Top investigator issues details on ongoing probe into 2020 assassination attempt of then-Speaker Mirzoyan

The Chairman of the Committee of Investigations Artur Poghosyan has commented on the ongoing investigation into the 2020 assassination attempt of then-Speaker of Parliament Ararat Mirzoyan, the incumbent FM.

Poghosyan, speaking in parliament, was asked by MP Hasmik Hakobyan from Civil Contract faction to explain why the criminal case into the assassination attempt hasn’t been closed for over 4 years.

“Active investigative actions have been carried out since the very beginning,” Poghosyan said.

“In the first couple of months the indictment of several dozens of persons was sent to court, and we already have guilty verdicts at this moment,” he said.

One suspect was jailed last year.

Poghosyan said large-scale investigative measures are ongoing to identify all suspects, organizers and other persons involved. “Soon we will have results,” he added.

Poghosyan said thanks to the national security service many persons of interest who were previously unknown have been identified in the case.

Mirzoyan, while serving as Speaker of Parliament in 2020, was assaulted by a group of rioters and severely beaten during the mass disturbances following the announcement of the Nagorno-Karabakh truce on November 9. He was hospitalized with severe injuries. Authorities are probing the incident as an attempted assassination.
