Chinese Professor believes Armenia could benefit from integrating ‘Belt and Road’ and ‘Crossroads of Peace’ initiatives

Professor Zheng Yuntian of Renmin University of China told Armenpress that Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative and Yerevan’s “Crossroads of Peace” program could be combined to Armenia’s benefit.

The Chinese professor said that amid a shifting global order, China and Armenia “should join efforts to develop and deepen cooperation.”

Assessing the current state of China-Armenia relations and future prospects for partnership, Zheng noted that ties between the two countries have strengthened since 2013, when China launched its Belt and Road Initiative.

“Many aspects are improving concerning trade and cultural exchanges. I am really optimistic about the relations between the two countries, because we have many similarities in terms of culture. I really believe that especially in the context of the changing world order, China and Armenia, with joint efforts, would develop and deepen relations,” he noted.

In his opinion, China’s Belt and Road Initiative would benefit Armenia in the future.

He also praised Armenia’s Crossroads of Peace program, which focuses on expanding transport and communication links.

“I got acquainted with this initiative last year and I think it is a very smart strategy for Armenia’s development. In my opinion, the ‘Belt and Road’ and ‘Crossroads of Peace’ initiatives could be combined and benefit Armenia in different aspects,” Zheng Yuntian emphasized.

The professor also commented on the Armenia-Azerbaijan negotiation process and the prospects for a peace agreement. He noted that from China’s diplomatic perspective, “peace, security and cooperation are always relevant themes of this era.”

“Regardless of what conflicts and wars are going on in other parts of the world, in Eurasia, especially in countries along the Ancient Silk Road, there is a need to pursue peace and development. China always emphasizes peace and development,” he concluded.
