Leader of the Voice of Reason party, MEP Afroditi Latinopoulou, has issued a statement on the 110th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, noting that Turkey’s persistent refusal to recognize the Genocide is an insult to the memory of the victims and a dangerous precedent for the future.
“The truth cannot be hidden, no matter how much it is tried to distort the fact. 1,500,000 Armenians were systematically exterminated by the Ottoman Empire in one of the most horrific genocides in human history. An entire people was driven to extinction through mass murders, forced death marches, and displacements,” the MEP stated on Facebook.
“The international community must finally take a stand. Turkey’s stubborn refusal to recognize the Genocide is not only an insult to the memory of the victims but also a dangerous precedent for the future. Political expediency cannot and should not prevail over historical truth. Europe, which proclaims itself a champion of democracy and human dignity, cannot and should not remain indifferent,” she said, calling for concrete action.
Voice of Reason will continue to fight for:
- Universal and international recognition of the Genocide without political games;
- Direct inclusion of historical truth in educational programs at all levels;
- Strengthening Armenian-Greek relations at the political, economic, and cultural levels;
- Strict sanctions against Genocide denial;
- Financial and moral compensation for the heirs of the victims
“As a people who themselves suffered from ethnic cleansing and genocide by Turkey, we are obliged to lead the struggle for historical truth. Historical memory is not a matter of negotiation. We stand unconditionally with the Armenian people,” she emphasized.
