Trump calls Florida shooting a ‘shame,’ but says he’ll ‘always protect the 2nd Amendment’

US President Donald Trump called the Florida State University shooting Thursday that killed two people and wounded at least six others a “shame,” but said he won’t be advocating for any new gun legislation and will “always protect the Second Amendment,” AP reports.

The Second Amendment to the US Constitution protects the right to keep and bear arms.

Two people were killed and at least six others were wounded Thursday when a gunman opened fire at Florida State University, and police said a 20-year-old suspect — the son of a sheriff’s deputy — was shot and taken into custody, according to AP.

The two people who died were not students at the university, said Florida State University Police Chief Jason Trumbower.

Six people were being treated at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, Trumbower said, and the shooter was also receiving medical attention.

Leon County Sheriff Walter McNeil identified the suspect as Phoenix Ikner, the son of a sheriff’s deputy within his department. McNeil said the deputy’s former service weapon was used in the shooting and found at the scene.

US President Donald Trump said from the Oval Office that he had been “fully briefed.”

“It’s a horrible thing. It’s horrible that things like this take place,” Trump said.

Asked by reporters if he planned on looking at stricter gun laws, Trump said, "These things are terrible. But the gun doesn't do the shooting, the people do."

"As far as legislation is concerned, this has been going on for a long time," Trump added. "I have an obligation to protect the Second Amendment. I ran on the Second Amendment, among many other things, and I will always protect the Second Amendment."
