UEFA sanctions Georgian football federation for Armenia match brawl

The Georgian football federation said it has been fined by the UEFA disciplinary committee for the incident during and after the second leg match of the Nations League play-offs against Armenia in Tbilisi when Georgian fans stormed the pitch.

“By UEFA's decision, the Georgian Football Federation was fined 40,000 euros for fans storming the pitch, using laser lights and pyrotechnics, and blocking exits, and the Georgian national team will play one home match behind closed doors,” the Georgian football federation said in a press release.

The ruling applies to competitions that fall under UEFA's disciplinary jurisdiction. Accordingly, it does not apply to friendly matches or qualifying matches for the 2025 World Cup in the autumn, the Georgian football federation said.

UEFA's decision also includes a two-year probationary period. If similar violations are repeated within two years, the Georgian national team will again play its next match behind closed doors.

After the incident, the Georgian football fan movement and federation had issued an apology.
