Yerevan City Hall reports significant improvement in air quality

The air quality in Yerevan has significantly improved in the current season, Mayor Tigran Avinyan said Monday.

He said the air quality monitoring devices across the city show significant improvement.

“During this season the air quality in Yerevan significantly changes for the better, and our 173 devices installed across the city have shown this. But we are mostly having problems during winter months,” Avinyan said in City Hall.

According to experts, the air pollution problem during winter season happens each year. There are several reasons for this, according to experts, such as an extra source of pollution pertaining to increased heating, as well as the city’s geographic location, where anticyclone inversion causes cold air to get trapped in the lower parts of the Ararat plain, including Yerevan. In addition, there are not enough evergreen trees in green spaces.

The City Hall has developed a 4-year action plan to reduce air pollution. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Environment has also developed its 2025-2030 action plan to tackle air pollution.
