Peace process not deadlocked, says Armenian official

Armenia’s readiness to sign the peace treaty was unexpected for Azerbaijan, Armenian Speaker of Parliament Alen Simonyan has said.
“I don’t think the process is in a deadlock,” Simonyan told reporters on Tuesday.
“Perhaps our offer to sign it and move forward in that logic was a bit unexpected for the Azerbaijani side. Maybe that’s why they had such a reaction. But I think the statements, media reports in Azerbaijan could become subject to a separate bilateral investigation. Work is underway in order to introduce a mechanism in case of such reports to prevent such things in the future,” Simonyan said.
He said that perhaps Azerbaijan believed that Armenia wasn’t going to accept any offer and that’s why they were surprised by Yerevan’s readiness. “Our goal is to achieve real result and not continue the conversation forever,” Simonyan added.
