Parliament majority intends to adopt EU bill

Speaker of Parliament Alen Simonyan said Tuesday that the ruling Civil Contract party intends to adopt the EU bill, the final hearing of which was recently postponed.

He told reporters that postponing the voting in the committee hearing was just a technicality and has nothing to do with geopolitical matters.

Asked whether the ruling party intends to adopt the bill, he said, “Of course we intend to do so. There is no issue aside from technicality.”

Asked about the possible consequences of adopting the bill, with some arguing that Armenia will have to withdraw from the Eurasian Economic Union, Speaker Simonyan said, “We are not discussing any other option or anything else at this phase. At this phase the Civil Contract only has a decision to vote in favor of the bill, and it will do so.”

The Armenian parliament adopted the bill on EU accession at first reading earlier in February.
