Armenian authorities have reiterated that the Jermuk mineral water, a carbonated bottled mineral water produced in Armenia by Jermuk Group, meets all required international standards and is safe for drinking.
In a statement on Monday, the ministry of economy said that the safety of the soda water has been proven as a result of studies conducted by the food safety inspection agency.
The statement came after Russian media reported that the family of a man who they claim died after drinking Jermuk in early 2024 seeks 1,5 billion rubles in compensation in a lawsuit against the Armenian producer. Russian media reported that the mineral water allegedly contained acetic acid and the man died from chemical burns.
“Filing lawsuits against any company is entirely up to any individual or their next of kin and the ministry cannot comment. But in relation to the essence of the lawsuit, the food safety inspection agency of Armenia has presented to the Russian side the relevant proof, based on inspections, that the Jermuk mineral water meets the requirements defined by international standards and is made to be used as food. The fact that the restrictions applied against Jermuk CJSC have been lifted in the entire territory of Russia proves that the evidence of the Armenian side has been sufficient. We believe that a fair court examination will once again state the innocence of the company,” the ministry said.
Jermuk Group told Armenpress they will issue a statement later.
