YEREVAN, DECEMBER 6, ARMENPRESS. Member of Parliament Artur Hovhannisyan has said that the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace talks aren’t in a deadlock despite difficulties.
Hovhannisyan, the Secretary of the ruling Civil Contract faction of parliament, said there are some difficulties and contentious points in the talks, but the negotiations are not in a deadlock.
The MP was responding to the latest aggressive statements and demands by Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev.
Speaking at a press briefing, the MP recalled that various statements have been made from Azerbaijan on various levels.
“But this shouldn’t create the impression as if the talks have entered a deadlock. No, the negotiations continue. Naturally, there are difficulties, contentious points in the talks, around which the discussions are more difficult and time-consuming. But we are not talking about a deadlock, we continue the negotiations,” the MP said.
He said the main negotiators continue to work around the conclusion of the peace treaty.
Hovhannisyan refused to disclose details about the talks.
Asked whether Armenia requires a mediator, he said, “We’ve said that we proceed from the logic of bilateral talks. Meetings have taken place. And once the prime minister, with a rather big and representative [delegation] had a direct meeting with [president]Aliyev. We accept support from any partner that is aimed at establishing peace in the region.”
Commenting on Azerbaijan’s refusal of the U.S. offer to organize a meeting of the Armenian and Azerbaijani foreign ministers during the OSCE ministerial council, the MP said Armenia naturally doesn’t approve of the refusal because meetings are designed to strengthen and advance the peace process.
