YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 18, ARMENPRESS. President of the Supreme Judicial Council, the country’s judicial oversight body, Karen Andreasyan, has announced his resignation.
“I want to get ahead of the layoff news,” he said in a statement, referring to unconfirmed reports of several high-profile resignations. “I am quitting both the presidency and membership at the Supreme Judicial Council. Everything is apparently clear, while I wouldn’t want to go into the root causes. Whatever I say will be interpreted in a thousand different ways and false reasons will be put forward. I’ve had such an experience before. Instead, allow me to plainly say that I have recovered the judicial system from a shameful crisis. People within the system know this for sure, and will accept it, except for a few together with their affiliates whom I have hurt for the sake of surgically treating the system. I have laid dozens of institutional foundations and, if not spoiled, everyone applying to courts will see the results in a few years. All our current failures in the judicial system are now mid-term, since it wasn’t possible to meet the justified public demands in two years, while we don’t want to meet unjustified demands. I would have to write in volumes in order to substantially explain why and how everyone’s positive expectations from the judicial system were broken. The text of resignation is too short for that. I am sincerely grateful to all the honest and professional judges and judicial officers in the system. I am grateful to our legislative and executive branches, particularly the Prime Minister, as well as the former and present members of the Supreme Judicial Council, for supporting our crisis management and of course for entrusting me with this difficult yet important position. I am leaving without any scandal, ill-feelings or despair, and as the one who lasted longest in this toxic position. I sincerely believe in tomorrow’s vision of having a fair court in strong Armenia. I will continue to support this highest dream in various positions.
