Vision described in Declaration of Independence depicts independent Armenia unrealistically, says lawmaker

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 15, ARMENPRESS. Member of Parliament Sargis Khandanyan has backed Prime Minister Pashinyan’s recent statement about the Declaration of Independence.

Speaking at parliamentary debates of the 2025 state budget, Pashinyan had said that he read the Declaration of Independence dozens of times during the past years. “And I have reached a horrifying conclusion that the content of the Declaration of Independence is that the Republic of Armenia cannot exist," Pashinyan said on November 14.

Khandanyan, a member of the ruling Civil Contract party and Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Relations, was asked by reporters on Friday whether he supports the PM’s statement and why the Declaration of Independence is deemed as a threat.

“That document was adopted in 1990, when there was no independent Armenia, but the vision described in the Declaration of Independence depicts the independent Republic of Armenia very unrealistically, therefore I share that approach,” Khandanyan said.
