Armenia considers new wheat import sources

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 5, ARMENPRESS. Armenia considers new, alternative sources for importing wheat, Minister of Economy Gevorg Papoyan has said.

Papoyan told Members of Parliament at a committee hearing on the 2025 state budget that this issue is under discussion with several countries.

“We are looking into alternative import sources. We are discussing this with several countries. Moreover, this is not [done] against any country. If, for example, we were to import 99% of our wheat from let’s say Romania, I would negotiate with Russia about wheat imports. This is a normal, logical process,” Papoyan said.

In terms of food security, Papoyan said he encourages wheat farming in uncultivated lands.

Most of Armenia’s wheat imports come from Russia.
