Commissions’ objective is to restore the border – Deputy PM

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 21, ARMENPRESS. The border delimitation commissions of Armenia and Azerbaijan are working to restore the border rather than draw it, Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan has said.

“You can never say that we are going to draw a border,” Grigoryan said in his response to a question from Hayastan faction MP Armen Rustamyan at a committee hearing on the border commission regulation between the two countries.

“And we can’t say that we are going to determine the circle of our authority as a body that should draw the border. Certainly, this is impossible and at least unconstitutional. But we don’t have an objective of drawing the border, we have an objective of restoring the border, restoring it on the basis of the maps that are legal,” Grigoryan said.

The map should be topographical, professional, drawn by an authorized body on the basis of legal documents that were imperative for both Armenia and Azerbaijan at that time.

“No complete map exists. There are maps of different sizes, approved in different times, those which took effect in various periods of time,” he said, adding that the 1976 USSR Armed Forces General Staff map is the one that was drawn by an authorized body in Soviet times.
