Weightlifter Samvel Gasparyan announces retirement

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 23, ARMENPRESS. Armenian weightlifter Samvel Gasparyan has announced his retirement from the sport due to injuries.

The two-time European Championship gold-winning athlete told Armenpress he’s quitting the sport due to knee injuries.

“I’ve had three surgeries on my knee, but the pain persists. I had enough time to make a final decision, and now I’ve made a decision that my health is my priority. I am quitting my professional career. This was a very difficult decision to make. I’ve always seen myself in sports, and it’s not going to be easy now,” Gasparyan said.

The weightlifter said he’s had the injury even during the 2021 European championship when he won gold despite the pain.

He said he will perhaps take on a new administrative role in sports.

Gasparyan won gold at the European Weightlifting Championships in 2021 and 2023. He won silver in the 2019, 2022 and 2024 championships. In 2022, Gasparyan won bronze at the World Weightlifting Championships.
