Achieving peace and stability with Azerbaijan is realistic, says Armenian FM

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 10, ARMENPRESS. Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan has said that Yerevan expects to achieve peace and stability with Azerbaijan and that doing so is realistic.

Speaking at the Yerevan Dialogue forum, Mirzoyan said there’ve been certain tangible steps in that direction.

“We can see that the delimitation of the border of Armenia and Azerbaijan has begun, we can see that there is a discussion around the unblocking of regional connections and economic infrastructures, and there is very constructive dialogue regarding the peace treaty,” he said at a panel discussion.

There is a real chance to close the chapter of animosity and open an era of stability and peace, the foreign minister added.

“We, Armenia, and Azerbaijan and Georgia, now have a real chance to close the chapter of animosity in our region and open an era of stability and peace. We believe this would be beneficial for us all, not just the three of us, but also for our neighbors, the wider region, all other actors and nations. We are now at the crossroads and we must choose. We have chosen the agenda of peace, because we believe in the benefit of peace. But this is similar to tango, you can’t dance alone, you must have a partner who wants to dance with you. This is a choice, which not only Armenia must make, it must be made by Azerbaijan and Georgia too. We have very good and brotherly relations with Georgia, and we want to establish peace and stability with Azerbaijan as well,” he said.

FM Mirzoyan said South Caucasus could be appealing for the world if Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan were to cooperate and be united. The more cooperation and tolerance in South Caucasus, the more the world’s interest for the region will grow, he said.
