Iran reiterates opposition to any extraterritoriality in Syunik

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 6, ARMENPRESS. Iran has reiterated its opposition to any extraterritoriality involving the road that would connect Azerbaijan proper with its Nakhchivan exclave through Armenia’s Syunik Province.

“We want everything that’s happening to happen under Armenia’s sovereignty,” Iranian Ambassador to Armenia Mehdi Sobhani told Sputnik Armenia when asked about Tehran’s stance on the possibility of Armenia delegating the road control to a private security company. “Any kind of control should be carried out by the Republic of Armenia, and we are not in favor of other countries coming here and trying to carry out some kind of security and control.”

Sobhani said he has heard about the reports on the possibility of a private company on the road, but that it doesn’t involve security control. “It’s about a representative of a given trade company being able to be present on the road upon shipping their goods,” he said, adding that security control would be carried out by Armenia, according to his information.
