Embassy of India in Armenia observes Partition Horrors Remembrance Day

YEREVAN, AUGUST 15, ARMENPRESS. The Government of India observes August 14 as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, honoring the memory of more than 1 million people who lost their lives in the struggle for independence and the tragic Partition, Ambassador of India to Armenia Nilakshi Saha Sinha told Armenpress.

On August 14, the Embassy of India in Armenia opened an exhibition titled Partition Horrors Remembrance Day.

“The context of the exhibition is that India gained independence on August 15 in 1947, after nearly 200 years of British colonial rule,” the Ambassador said. She added that India gained independence through a very painful path, because it occurred as a result of an artificial partition of the country, which resulted in millions of people being forced to leave their homes and move through Pakistan and India.

The Ambassador said that these events are great tragedies not only for India but entire mankind.

“It is important to speak about this now, to commemorate all those who died during that violence,” the Indian Ambassador said.

Ambassador of India to Armenia Nilakshi Saha Sinha said the Embassy intends to organize such exhibitions every year.

“August 14 is also marked as the Pakistani Independence Day. And India gained independence one day later, on August 15, however only officially, because afterwards our constitution took effect on January 26 in 1950,” the Ambassador added, noting that the exhibition is dedicated to the painful history of how the people of India gained independence. The Ambassador said that her own family members were also affected by the events.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced in 2021 that August 14 would be observed annually as 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day' to pay tribute to those who lost their lives and were displaced during the country's partition in 1947.
