The commitment to genocide prevention worldwide must be deepened - Bakoyan

YEREVAN, AUGUST 3, ARMENPRESS. Genocide is a crime against humanity, and it is the gravest crime. Rustam Bakoyan, Deputy Chairman of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Human Rights Protection and Public Affairs, wrote about this on his Facebook page, referring to the 10th anniversary of the Yazidi genocide in Sinjar. The message reads as follows:

“10 years have passed since the tragedy of August 3, 2014.

In the 21st century, a genocide took place in front of the civilized world, which is still not over, as around 2,600 women and girls are still in the hands of Islamists, and 100,000 Yezidis are in camps.

This year was symbolic for me, I'm sure, for my fellow yezidi people as well, because the National Assembly adopted the project authored by me on making an amendment to the law "On Holidays and Memorial Days of the Republic of Armenia" and designated August 3 as the date of the 2014 Sinjar Yezidi Genocide Memorial Day.

This was a historic event for both Yezidis and the Republic of Armenia, because, although dozens of countries condemned the Yezidi genocide, we designated it as a Memorial Day.

In order to prevent the recurrence of genocides, the commitment to genocide prevention worldwide must be deepened in diplomatic strategies, geopolitics and people's perceptions.

Paying tribute to the vivid memory of the innocent victims, I hope that humanity will not fall victim to such monstrous crimes again.”
