Human Rights Union of Nagorno-Karabakh Refugees urges Pope Francis to advocate for Armenian refugees' right to return to homeland

YEREVAN, JULY 31, ARMENPRESS. The Human Rights Union of Nagorno-Karabakh has sent a letter to His Holiness Pope Francis.

In a letter to His Holiness Pope Francis, the Human Rights Union of Nagorno-Karabakh Refugees has urged him to call on the international community to provide immediate humanitarian aid and protection to Armenian refugees, ensuring their safety, preserving their identity, and upholding their fundamental right to return to their homeland.

The Union has also requested that the Pope publicly condemn Azerbaijan for the crimes it has committed, including the destruction of the Christian heritage of Nagorno-Karabakh. According to the Union, the Pope's condemnation of these events would draw greater attention to Azerbaijan's actions and push it toward accountability.

"We, the members of the Human Rights Union of Nagorno-Karabakh Refugees, are writing to you with deep respect to draw your attention to the plight of the Armenian refugees of Nagorno-Karabakh and the severe acts of war and vandalism committed by Azerbaijan against ethnic Armenians and Armenian Christian historical heritage.

"As the spiritual leader of millions of people around the world, your voice resonates with compassion, justice, and moral authority. We seek your immediate support in protecting the rights of Armenian refugees who have been forcibly displaced from their ancestral lands due to the conflict and Azerbaijan's aggression," the letter reads.

The Union has also mentioned in its letter that the Armenian people are now witnessing the destruction of their Christian heritage, including churches, monastic complexes, and monuments of great historical and spiritual significance.
