Spanish legislator lauds EU aid to Armenia, calls for more int’l support

YEREVAN, JULY 29, ARMENPRESS. The EU’s decision to allocate €10 million to Armenia is a “strategic investment in peace and security,” according to Spanish legislator Jon Inarritu.

On July 22, the EU Council adopted an assistance measure under the European Peace Facility (EPF) in support of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Armenia worth €10 million.

Asked to comment on the EU’s move, member of the Congress of Deputies of Spain, Jon Inarritu, told Armenpress that the “funding will enhance Armenia's defensibility, improve civilian protection, and contribute to regional stability.”

“The €10 million allocation to Armenia from the EU is a strategic investment in peace and security. This funding will enhance Armenia's defensibility, improve civilian protection, and contribute to regional stability, embodying the principles of solidarity and cooperation that define the EU-Armenia relationship. This is not just a financial contribution but a statement of solidarity and recognition of Armenia's strategic importance in the region. The EU's decision is a clear signal of support for Armenia's sovereignty and territorial integrity. The financial support will improve the protection of civilians in crisis and emergency situations. This means better preparedness and quicker response times in the face of natural disasters, armed conflicts, or other emergencies, essential for safeguarding the lives and well-being of Armenian citizens,” the Spanish lawmaker said in written comments.

He added that a “stronger, more capable Armenia” contributes to the overall stability of the region.

“A stronger, more capable Armenia contributes to the overall stability of the South Caucasus region. Hopefully, this will not be a one-time allocation, but part of a sustained support effort from democratic countries to prevent further aggression from Azerbaijan. The recent war rhetoric from the Aliyev regime in response to this allocation and the joint military drills between the US and Armenia underscores the ongoing threat. Continued international support is crucial to ensuring Armenia's security and stability,” Inarritu said.
