IOC declares Olympic truce ahead of Paris 2024

YEREVAN, JULY 19, ARMENPRESS. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has declared the start of an Olympic truce, according to a press release by the Committee.

"The Olympic Games #Paris2024, as an event that unites the world in peaceful competition, will be a powerful reminder that we can all come together peacefully," the organization said on X.

The 2024 Summer Olympic Games will be held in Paris from July 26 till August 11.

The tradition of the Olympic Truce was established in Ancient Greece in the 9th century BC to allow safe participation in the ancient Olympic Games for all athletes and spectators from three Greek city-states, which were otherwise almost constantly engaged in conflict with each other. The International Olympic Committee officially revived the tradition in 1992 and the following year the UN General Assembly supported the move.
