Iran will double the electricity import from Armenia to Iran in the near future

YEREVAN, JULY 19, ARMENPRESS. Thanks to the extension of the Gas for Electricity agreement until 2030, every year Iran exports 360 million cubic meters of gas to Armenia, importing electricity in return, and the completion of the construction of the third power transmission line from Armenia to Iran will allow to double the electricity import from Armenia to Iran in the near future․ Mehdi Sobhani stated this in an interview with SNN․

“I have been in Yerevan for almost a year, and during this time we have managed to achieve significant progress in relations between Iran and Armenia. Armenia is one of our neighbors and has a 46 km border with us, which is one of the most secure borders,” said Ambassador of Iran, emphasizing that the historical relations between Yerevan and Tehran have been very positive and clear, and since Armenia gained independence, cooperation between the two countries has always developed.

Mehdi Sobhani highlighted that last year, Iran signed its largest contract with the Armenian government since Armenia's independence.

“This contract provides for the construction of the Agarak-Kajaran road in the southern part of Armenia, which is located on the route of the North-South corridor. With a value of $212 million, this project substantially enhances the export of technical and engineering services from the Islamic Republic of Iran to Armenia,” the ambassador noted. He added that the project will reduce travel time from one hour and 20 minutes to just 20 minutes, and expand the road width from 6 meters to 17 meters, significantly improving safety and speed.

He also added that there are other, smaller projects worth $36 million in different places in Armenia.

“In the field of trade, we managed to increase trade turnover with Armenia from $200 million to $711 million. Armenia, with its 3 million population, is a member of the Eurasian Union, which made this country a platform for the 200 million-strong Eurasian market,” Ambassador Sobhani emphasized.

He added that 400 trucks travel between Iran and Armenia every day, and last year 161,000 Armenians traveled to Iran, taking with them goods worth $80 million
