US Deputy Secretary of State, Uzra Zeya, visits the Armenian Genocide Memorial

YEREVAN, JULY 14, ARMENPRESS. US Deputy Secretary of State, Uzra Zeya, accompanied by Christina Quinn, US Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Armenia, visited the Armenian Genocide Memorial on July 14.

According to a press release from the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute (AGMI), the guests were greeted by the director of the AGMI, Edita Gzoyan. She accompanied the guests to the Armenian Genocide Memorial, presenting the history of the memorial’s creation.

"Ms. Zeya laid down a wreath at the memorial commemorating the victims of the Armenian Genocide, after which the guests placed flowers near the eternal fire and honored the memory of the innocent victims of the Armenian Genocide with a minute of silence.

“Edita Gzoyan, the director of AGMI, accompanied the guests to the Memory Wall, which holds urns with soil taken from the graves of foreign public and political figures, intellectuals and missionaries who have spoken out against the mass massacres of Armenians and the genocide carried out by the Turkish government in the late 19th century and early 20th century. While discussing the pro-Armenian activism of Henry Morgenthau and Clara Burton, Edita Gzoyan highlighted that it is thanks to their work that the American public is aware of the massacres of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire, and that the recognition of the Armenian Genocide by the United States was in part a tribute to their memory. The AGMI director also presented the history of the Memory Lane, and noted that the first tree was planted by US senator Robert Dole in 1997, in memory of American-Armenian surgeon Hambar Kelekyan, who was a survivor of the Armenian Genocide,” the press release reads.

The delegation members also visited the Armenian Genocide Museum and looked over the permanent and temporary exhibitions. Uzra Zeya also made a note in the memory book of Honored guests. Edita Gzoyan thanked the guests for their visit, and gifted them books about the Armenian Genocide, as well as Ara Ketipyan's book "Azeri Aggression against Armenians in Transcaucasia (1905-1921). Reports from the U.S. Press".
