Armenia would not exist if it were not a democratic country - Pashinyan

YEREVAN, JULY 1, ARMENPRESS. Prime Minister Pashinyan expressed the conviction that if Armenia were not a democratic country, it would not currently exist as an independent state. According to him, the country has experienced difficult events in recent years and overcame them thanks to democracy.

The Prime Minister of Armenia stated this at the 3rd Armenian Democracy Forum, answering the question of what kind of democracy he wants to see in Armenia.

“I want to see institutional democracy. Why? Because, based on this 6-year experience, I am convinced that all the changes that could be implemented in Armenia only due to political will have been made. Even today we have the political will to continue these reforms. But we will see that the rapid pace of change that began in 2018-2019 has slowed down for a moment, and now there are more feelings of dissatisfaction with the implementation of the agenda of these changes and reforms than satisfaction,” the Prime Minister noted and added that desire is not enough.

He emphasized that this desire is stronger because the benefits of democracy are obvious, including the following logic that democracy ultimately increases the resilience of the state and society.

Prime Minister emphasized that the point of view is constantly expressed and repeated that Armenia is going through difficult times, and this is true, but they do not ask the question of how and thanks to what the country is going through these difficulties. He expressed confidence that Armenia is experiencing all this thanks to democracy.

 “If we were not a democratic country, I assure you, we would not have an independent state today. But, therefore, we must also state that what could be done thanks to political will has already happened and is completed, and we already need institutional solutions,” the Prime Minister said in his speech.
