Borrell condemns attack against crowd waiting for aid in Gaza

YEREVAN, MARCH 1, ARMENPRESS. EU foreign policy chief JosepBorrell condemned the attack on a crowd waiting for humanitarian aid in Gaza, that killed more than 100 people.

“I am horrified by news of yet another carnage among civilians in Gaza desperate for humanitarian aid. These deaths are totally unacceptable,”High Representativeof theEuropeanUnion for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy wrote on social media platform X.

Borrell added that depriving people of food aid constitutes a serious violation of international humanitarian law and called for “unhindered humanitarian access to Gaza.”

Hamas-led Gaza health officials said Israeli troops fired on Feb. 29 on a large crowd of Palestinians racing to pull food off an aid convoy, killing at least 112 people and injuring 760 others.

Many Western countries, including France, Canada and Spain, have condemned the attack.

Israel said many of the dead were trampled in a chaotic stampede and as a result of being run over by aid trucks. The IDF's chief military spokesman Daniel Hagari said Israeli troops guarding the area fired warning shots toward the crowd because they felt endangered.
