YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 9, ARMENPRESS. The Armenian military plans to introduce a new option of military service for women.

The bill was put into circulation by the Ministry of Defense. It envisages a 6-month service option on voluntary basis for women.

“The bill is in circulation, everyone can get acquainted with it. We will do everything to manage [the works] by winter conscription, because I can’t say for sure if we will be able to manage it before the summer conscription in terms of infrastructures. It all depends on our speed,” Minister of Defense Suren Papikyan said at the Cabinet meeting.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan was pleased to note that they are entering another important reforms phase. After passing the 6-month service, women will have the opportunity to sign up for a longer-term service, again voluntarily, if the bill gets approved.

Pashinyan said the infrastructures must be either new or highly upgraded for women in the military. “This is a new chapter, and we must start this process with new content and freshness,” Pashinyan said.
