Armenia, Georgia simplify travel document requirements

YEREVAN, JANUARY 12, ARMENPRESS. Armenian and Georgian nationals will be enabled to enter the two countries by producing only ID cards. Passports will no longer be required upon crossing the border.

Foreign Minister of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan commented on the simplification of the border crossing procedure at the Cabinet meeting.

“Building special relations with neighboring Georgia is among the foreign policy priorities of Armenia. That’s precisely stipulated in the Government Program. Practically too there are intensive contacts between all ministries in the most various levels. Georgia is also one of the favorite business and leisure destinations for our citizens. In 2019, 1 million 365 thousand citizens of Armenia visited Georgia. Of course the pandemic caused some decline, but we believe the dynamics will soon be recovered,” Mirzoyan said. The Cabinet approved the decision to sign the agreement.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan attached importance to the decision. However, he noted that it could cause some risks, and that productive work will be done with Georgian partners in this regard. “I am pleased to note that today we are expecting the visit of the Georgian delegation led by Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili. The meeting of the intergovernmental commission of Armenia and Georgia will take place in Yerevan. We hope to sign this agreement, among others, as part of the session,” PM Pashinyan said.
