Armenian President meets with Iraqi counterpart in Egypt

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 7, ARMENPRESS. President of Armenia Vahagn Khachaturyan met with President of Iraq Abdul Latif Rashid on the sidelines of the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) in Egypt, the Armenian President’s Office said.

In his remarks President Khachaturyan said that Iraq is Armenia’s reliable partner in the region and that Armenia attaches great importance to the deepening of multisectoral cooperation with that country.

In his turn the Iraqi President said Armenians living in Iraq enjoy the support of the Iraqi authorities and they highly value the Armenian-Iraqi close relations. According to him, a positive dynamics has been observed in the bilateral trade turnover in the past years, which, he called, a sign of a serious bilateral economic potential, stressing the need for efforts aimed at utilizing this potential.

President Vahagn Khachaturyan noted that Armenia has wonderful relations with the Islamic, including with most of the Arab countries. In this context he expressed concerns about the latest remarks made by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev during the Arab League Summit where he speculated the religious factor in his accusations against Armenia, giving a religious tone to the Nagorno Karabakh conflict and attempting to oppose the Islamic, in this case the Arab countries against Armenia. The President said that the Nagorno Karabakh conflict does not have and cannot have a religious tone, as Armenians of Nagorno Karabakh are fighting for their rights to live and create safely in their homeland.

The sides agreed to continue the mutual contacts aimed at boosting the economic ties and intensifying the mutual partnership in different areas.
