National Assembly Speaker receives President of Greece

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 30, ARMENPRESS: National Assembly Speaker Galust Sahakyan received on September 30 the delegation headed by President of Greece Karolos Papoulias. Welcoming the high-ranking guests at the National Assembly, Galust Sahakyan noted that the friendship between Armenian and Greek peoples is conditioned by centuries-long mutual respect, common historical past, by common features of spiritual and cultural values and national characteristics, the National Assembly press service informed Armenpress. According to the NA Speaker, Greek President’s visit to Armenia will promote to deepening of the Armenian-Greek friendship and the political dialogue.

Speaking of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, Galust Sahakyan stressed that Armenian authorities strive to settle the conflict in a peaceful way under the patronage of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs. It is the only acceptable format of the Nagorno Karabakh issue regulation, but the intensive accumulation of arms by Azerbaijan is a serious threat not only for security and sustainability of the South Caucasus but the entire region.

Speaking of the Armenian Genocide Centenary, Galust Sahakyan noted with gratification that the Greek Parliament has been among the first countries to recognize the Armenian Genocide and expressed gratitude for adoption of the genocides denial criminalizing bill on September 9 at the Greek Parliament.

NA Speaker underlined that the presence of the Greek high-ranking officials at the 2015 centenary-dedicated events will show once again Greek people’s complete devotion to universal human values.

Expressing gratitude for warm reception, Karolos Papoulias referred to centuries-long friendship between Armenian and Greek people. He stressed that over the centuries the two peoples have supported each other fighting against common enemies.

Referring to the NK conflict, President of Greece noted that Greece’s position is distinct in that issue and Mrs Dora Bakoyannis deviated from the official position and that approach will be condemned by the Greek government. Karolos Papoulias said that like Armenians Greeks too want to maintain civil relations with the neighbor countries, which they not always manage to do.

Karolos Papoulias highlighted the role of the parliamentary diplomacy in deepening of cooperation between the two states.
