Nagorno Karabakh will never be part of Azerbaijan: Galust Sahakyan

YEREVAN, AUGUST 14, ARMENPRESS. The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia Galust Sahakyan considers any meeting of the Presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan advantageous, taking into account the fact that Armenia, unlike Azerbaijan, has adopted the path of peace talks for the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Galust Sahakyan does not believe that Azerbaijan will end its provocative policy and stresses that Nagorno-Karabakh will never be part of Azerbaijan, since in recent days the Armenian army has shown that it is standing firmly and the Armenian people are always beside the army. "Armenpress" has had an interview with the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia Galust Sahakyan on the recent border tensions, Sochi meeting, the Armenian captive Karen Petrosyan’s murder in Azerbaijan, as well as the activities of the Government of the Republic of Armenia and the upcoming session of the National Assembly. Here is a fragment of the interview.

Mr. Sahakyan, in recent days the Azerbaijani side several times undertook attempts of subversive penetration and, encountering serious resistance from the Armenian side, was thrown back with losses. In your opinion, what was the aim of Azerbaijan?

I think the answer to that question has been clearly presented by the President of Armenia. I think that with such actions Azerbaijan was trying to solve its domestic problems. It was no coincidence that in recent months the international community had quite strictly criticized Azerbaijan in terms of freedom of speech and human rights protection. Naturally, here Turkey could also have an influence, which was at that time preparing for the presidential elections. Turkey is trying to secure a major role in the region, and its younger brother, Azerbaijan has to “add fuel to the fire”. Anyway, for us it was also a period of trials. As a result, it became possible to confirm before the international community the high level of our defense capacity, about which we have always spoken.

Border tension was followed by the trilateral meeting of the Presidents of Armenia, Russia and Azerbaijan in Sochi. What did this meeting give to the parties and what steps will follow this meeting for the peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict?

Of course there were some quite serious issues that should be considered. Just before the meeting the most urgent problem became border tension, which was provoked by Azerbaijan. I think the President's visit to Sochi was announced in advance, the agenda was announced as well. It had to be connected with the Armenian-Russian relations, in particular, with further scenarios of the Eurasian Economic Union. Nevertheless, I believe that the meeting helped to give all the answers to the questions that our society was concerned about, related to the border tension, the peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the Armenian-Russian relations and Armenia’s accession to the Eurasian Economic Union.
