OSCE Chairperson-in-Office calls US to be active in Karabakh issue

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 26, ARMENPRESS: The OSCE Chairperson-in-Office and the Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Swiss Confederation Didier Burkhalter appealed to the United States of America to show activity in the Karabakh conflict regulation issue, while addressing the Helsinki Commission in Washington. Armenpress reports, citing the official website of the US Senate that Didier Burkhalter said that one of his first meetings as Chairperson-in-Office was with the three co-chairs of the Minsk Group. “Nagorno Karabakh is one of the most dangerous conflicts in Europe,” said Didier Burkhalter.

He noted the role of international community in the resolution of the conflict: “I wish to emphasize at this point that both in Karabakh and in Georgia, United States involvement at the highest political level would be helpful for our efforts. I am convinced that the stalemate in these protracted conflicts can only be overcome with greater engagement and attention by international key players such as the United States.”

The Chairperson-in-Office said that control over conventional arms control, confidence-building measures and security play a key role in joint efforts to strengthen stability and transparency in the OSCE region.

Didier Burkhalter informed that he intends to visit the South Caucasus.
