Expert finds modernization of nuclear power station more profitable

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 19, ARMENPRESS.  The construction and operation of a new nuclear power station can lead surplus of the produced electricity, and therefore issues related to the exportation. While the modernization of the Armenian nuclear power station is more profitable for Armenia. The Director of the center for “Noravank” fund political researches Sevak Sarukhanyan said it at the course of the international conference held in Yerevan. According to him, the assigned power of the new nuclear power station is 1000 MW which is equal to the annual volume of the consumption of electricity in Armenia.  “If that station is built, then the other areas of the energy will demolish. The only solution in that situation will be the exportation of the surplus of electricity which is associated with a number of other problems,” he said, as reported by “Armenpress”.

According to the expert, there are problems of exportation with Turkey and Azerbaijan because of the closed border, as for Georgia, it exports electricity itself. “The prospects of exporting electricity produced in Armenia to Iran are not certain as well, in case of the construction of a new nuclear power station, as it is not profitable for Tehran. The price for 1 kW / h electricity produced by the Armenian nuclear power station will cost around 16 cents, while Iran subsidizes the price for electricity at the moment and supplies the consumers with only 2 cents,” Sarukhanyan stated. He informed that 200-300 million dollars will be needed for the modernization of Metsamor nuclear power station, while the construction of a new unit will cost about $ 5 billion.
