Ceasing to use Gabala can cause crisis of Russian-Azerbaijani relations

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 11, ARMENPRESS. Forcing Russian militaries out of Azerbaijani territory will cause serious problems in Russian-Azerbaijani relations. In a conversation with "Armenpress" political scientist Hrant Melik-Shahnazaryan expressed this opinion touching upon the circumstances, which can arouse if the Russian side ceases to use Gabala radiolocation station. Melik-Shahnazaryan stated: "Particularly if we take into consideration that previously Russia has made rather serious concessions on behalf of the Azerbaijani side ceding a number of regions on the shore of Samur river, which caused territorial dispute after the collapse of the USSR."

Among other things the political scientist noted that due to its western orientation regarding military cooperation, Azerbaijan can have problems not merely with Russia alone, but with Iran as well, which creates a very beneficent situation for Armenia from geopolitical viewpoint. Melik-Shahnazaryan said: "The military cooperation between our ally and rival will become rather limited. To my opinion in future they will have to face new troubles." According to the political scientist the deterioration of the Russian-Azerbaijani relations can deprive Azerbaijan of the opportunity to buy cheap weaponry from Russia.

The United States of America and Turkey do not want to see military presence of any other country in the Azerbaijani territory. Political scientist underscored: "In this respect forcing Russia out provides a profitable position for them."
