“Beautiful and heroic story”, President Sarkissian eulogizes Gohar Vardanyan in Moscow
YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 29, ARMENPRESS. President of Armenia Armen Sarkissian attended WWII era intelligence officer Gohar Vardanyan’s funeral in Moscow.
Sarkissian delivered a eulogy, praising Gohar Vardanyan and her late husband Gevork’s activities and merit.
The Armenian president described the lives of Gohar and Gevork as “a beautiful and heroic story, full of the kind of real episodes which were sometimes unfathomable”.
Gohar Vardanyan was buried with full military honors at the Troyekurovskoye Cemetery in Moscow, next to her husband’s grave.
Gohar Vardanyan and her late husband, Gevork (died in 2012 at the age of 87) were involved in foiling Operation Long Jump -- a Nazi plot to kill the "Big Three" (Winston Churchill, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Joseph Stalin) while the Allied leaders were in Tehran for their first meeting during World War II in 1943.
Gohar Vardanyan died aged 93 on Monday.
