Armenian President to attend WW2-era spy legend Gohar Vardanyan’s funeral in Moscow

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 28, ARMENPRESS. President Armen Sarkissian will attend Gohar Vardanyan’s funeral on November 29 in Moscow.

Sarkissian’s Office said the president personally knew Gohar and her husband Gevork, the two legendary Soviet-era Armenian intelligence officers. Sarkissian visited the Vardanyans on every opportunity and maintained good relations.

Gohar Vardanyan died aged 93 on Monday.

Gohar Vardanyan and her late husband, Gevork (died in 2012 at the age of 87)  were involved in foiling Operation Long Jump -- a Nazi plot to kill the "Big Three" (Winston Churchill, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Joseph Stalin) while the Allied leaders were in Tehran for their first meeting during World War II in 1943.

Dmitry Peskov, press secretary to Russian President Vladimir Putin, said in a press conference call Wednesday that the Russian leader offered his condolences.

Peskov said the husband and wife spy duo affected the course of human history.

Gohar Vartanyan was born in Gyumri on January 25, 1926.
