Ombudsman calls for immediate investigation into footage showing torture

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 22, ARMENPRESS. Ombudsman of Armenia Arman Tatoyan has called on authorities to immediately launch an investigation in relation to a video posten online containing what he describes as an “alleged torture case”.

The video shows a group of men – said to be law enforcement officers – repeatedly beating a man in a room. The identities of the perpetrators and the victim is unknown.

“A criminal case is to be launched immediately based on this video containing an alleged torture case.

All investigative actions should be conducted within criminal proceedings, according to the Criminal Code of Procedure of Armenia.

I will send an officially signed letter to the criminal prosecution body with respective demand tomorrow morning. The case will be under my close attention within the competence of the Human Rights Defender”, Tatoyan said in a statement published on his Facebook account early Friday morning.
