CoE Committee of Ministers launches unprecedented court proceedings against Azerbaijan

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 6, ARMENPRESS. The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe launched an unprecedented court case on December 5 on Azerbaijan failing to implement a judgment of the European Court of Human Rights, Vice Speaker of Armenia’s Parliament Arpine Hovhannisyan said.

“The Committee of Ministers hasn’t made such a decision in the past against any state. Let me remind you that the case concerns the illegal sentencing of Azerbaijani oppositionist Ilgar Mammedov. Since 2014, both the committee of ministers and the parliamentary assembly adopted decisions and resolutions urging Azerbaijani authorities to release Mammedov, however he remains jailed even after three years since the ECHR judgment”, Hovhannisyan said.

She reminded that Azerbaijan was previously warned that investigations will be launched in case of failure to continue to implement the judgment.
