Investigative Committee chief highlights tackling domestic violence murders

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 7, ARMENPRESS. The Investigative Committee initiated 94 criminal cases in 2015 based on Articles 104-108 of the Criminal Code, 16 of which were domestic violence murders. 7 out of 168 criminal cases of Article 112 were again domestic violence occurrences in 2015. Aghvan Hovsepyan, chairman of the Investigative Committee, highlighted the elimination of domestic violence crimes during a briefing on studies conducted on criminal cases regarding domestic violence murders.

“It is one thing when the crime is carried out on the street, but it’s another thing when it happens in the family. The preservation of the respect principle among family members is important. Our investigators seek to prevent these actions when carrying out preliminary investigation”, he said, adding the investigators must not only reveal facts, but also uncover previous incidents.

6 of the domestic violence murders happened in provinces, 10 in Yerevan. 13 criminal cases were sent to courts, 6 with indictments, 7 with motions of enforcing medical actions. 12 of the 16 perpetrators were male, and 4 female. None of them were previously convicted.

Aghvan Hovsepyan awarded the 4th Class Medal to Syunik and Lori investigators for effective work.
