YEREVAN, JANUARY 17, ARMENPRESS. The elections of new President of the European Parliament will be held on January 17 in Strasbourg, “Armenpress” reports citing the EP official website.

Martin Schulz announced in November he is stepping down after five years.

Seven candidates have put themselves forward for the post so far ahead of the first ballot on Tuesday morning.

According to observers, the contenders for the EP president’s post are Antonio Tajani (EPP, Italy), Gianni Pittella (S&D, Italy) and Guy Verhofstadt (ALDE, Belgium).

The new head of the Parliament will be elected by a secret ballot.
