“Blow from US”, “Scandalous”: Turkey wakes up to Armenian Genocide headlines after US House passage

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 30, ARMENPRESS. The recognition of the Armenian Genocide by the US House of Representatives has unsurprisingly made headlines in Turkey, with local newspapers labeling the move “scandalous”.

Hurriyet newspaper said in an article that a similar resolution failed to be put up for vote in the House back in 2010 because of signals from Turkey.

Turkey’s state-run Anadolu news agency immediately published the Turkish foreign ministry’s official statement after the vote, where Ankara is expressing strong criticism: “The U.S. Administration and politicians as well as the American people are best placed to consider the damages this resolution seeking to disrupt Turkey-U.S ties does and will inflict upon the U.S. interests at an extremely fragile time in terms of the international and regional security”, the Turkish foreign ministry said.

Anadolu also quoted Turkish FM Mevlut Cavusoglu’s tweet, where the FM said they find the resolution to be “null and void”.

YeniSafak’s headlined the news “Scandalous blow from the United States”.

HaberTurk published a list of countries which have already recognized the Armenian Genocide, noting that the process began with Uruguay’s recognition.

Several dozens of Turkish media outlets and newspapers have published articles regarding the US House passage of the resolution.

On October 29 the US House of Representatives adopted the Armenian Genocide Resolution (H.Res.296) by a vote of 405 to 11 with 3 voting present.
