Parliament approves adding Disaster Resistance Day in national calendar

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 12, ARMENPRESS. The Armenian Parliament adopted at first hearing the bill on making December 7 the Day of Remembrance of Earthquake Victims and Disaster Resistance.

The bill is submitted to parliament by the government.

Currently December 7 is marked as the Day of Commemoration of the Spitak Earthquake Victims, and given the general direction of the planned events under the Disaster Resistance Day initiated by the prime minister, the two will be merged and December 7 will be commemorated as the Day of Remembrance of Earthquake Victims and Disaster Resistance.

The bill was adopted unanimously at first hearing.

On December 7, 1988 a devastating earthquake hit Armenia, killing more than 25000 people. Half a million people became homeless.
