Ex-mayor of Armenian town pleads guilty to corruption charges, restores millions in damages

YEREVAN, MARCH 1, ARMENPRESS. Former Mayor of Hrazdan Aram Danielyan has restored damages he had inflicted during his tenure by paying back more than 100 million drams and has been released from arrest, authorities said.

Danielyan was arrested on February 26 in suspicion of misconduct and embezzlement.

The Investigative Committee said he embezzled more than 102 million drams while in office as mayor of the Armenian town. Danielyan conspired with two senior tax officials of his office to misappropriate the land and property taxes, totaling 102,198,525 drams.

According to authorities he accepted the charges on February 28 and recovered the entire amount, thus restoring the damages he had inflicted. He has been released from arrest.

Authorities said the investigation into the criminal case is still ongoing.
