Parliamentary discussion over Ombudsman’s election kicks off

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 22, ARMENPRESS. Discussions on the election of the Human Rights Defender have started at the parliament. The chairman of National Assembly Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs Hovhannes Sahakyan informed the MPs that the Committee has nominated Arman Tatoyan’s candidacy for the post of the Human Rights Defender, expressing conviction that he will manage to confidently carry out his duties and functions as the human Rights Defender.

Arman Tatoyan mentioned in his speech that the protection of human rights and basic freedoms is one of the most sensitive and important responsibilities of any state. He stated that it can have a direct impact on the development of the state. “Protection of human rights and the role of the Human Rights Defender as part of it were reconsidered after the Constitutional referendum of 2015. On the one hand, the role of that institution has been increased as an improvement of the legal system of the country, on the other hand, every individual citizen obtained an absolute right to apply to the Human Rights Defender. This is the modern approach based on the European value system that serves as the basis for the development of the legal system of Armenia”, “Armenpress” reports, Tatoyan mentioned.

He noted with regret that many problems that cause violation of human rights continue to remain unsolved in Armenia. In his words, hard work is required in terms of human rights protection.
