Police officer and civilian killed in PKK assault in Diyarbakir

YEREVAN, JULY 30, ARMENPRESS: A policeman and a civilian were killed when assailants from the terrorist Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) opened fire on the plainclothes police officer in the southeastern province ofDiyarbakiron Wednesday night, news reports say, Armenpress reports, citing Today’s Zaman.

According to initial reports, police officer Mehmet Uyar and two civilians were injured when PKK members from a car opened fire on Uyar as he was sitting in front of a tea house in the Çınar district. The injured were immediately taken at the Çınar State Hospital but doctors were unable to save Uyar and civilian Osman Caran. Another civilian injured in the attack, İbrahim Turan, is reportedly still receiving treatment.

Security forces launched a large scale operation to capture the assailants.

The PKK has recently launched attacks on the Turkish police and members of the military. The group shot two police officers in the head at their home in Şanlıurfa last week. The PKK also killed a soldier and injured another last Thursday in the province of Diyarbakır after ambushing them. A non-commissioned officer was killed by PKK militants in the province of Adıyaman last week as well.

Most recently, a major was killed while he was driving with his wife in the Malazgirt district of Muş on Monday night. Maj. Arslan Kulaksız was the gendarmerie commander of the district.
