The Armenian community of Georgia calls the Georgian Parliament and the President for discussing the issue of Armenian Genocide recognition

YEREVAN, APRIL 12, ARMENPRESS: The Armenian community of Georgia applied to the Georgian Parliament and the President and called on to discuss the issue of officially recognizing the Armenian Genocide. An official from the Armenian Cooperation Center of Georgia told Armenpress that letters with the request of drafting a law on this issue were sent to the President of Georgia, to the spokesman of the parliament, the parliamentary factions, as well as to those members of the parliament of Armenian descent.

They were asked to make a statement on this issue during parliamentary sessions before April 24 and to request the parliament of Georgia to commemorate the innocent victims of the Armenian Genocide of 1915-1923. The appeal was initiated by the following NGOs: The Armenian Community of Georgia, The Armenian Cooperation Centre of Georgia, and Association of Armenian Students of Georgia. 2010 is the 95th anniversary of the first genocide of the 20th century, the Armenian Genocide, committed 1915 by the Ottoman Empire. More than 1.5 million Armenians were killed on their historic homeland during the period of 1915-1923. Over 21 states, as well as several international organizations, such as the European Union, the Council of Europe and World Council of Churches officially recognized the Armenian Genocide. Today the Armenian Genocide is officially recognized by Uruguay, Argentina, Cyprus, Russia, Greece, Lebanon, Belgium, Sweden, Italy, France, Switzerland, Canada, Slovakia, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Lithuania, Venezuela, Chili and The Vatican City.
